Das Ergebnis dokumentiert die Lebensnähe der Predigtaussagen der lutherisch-orthodoxen Theologen. This study evaluates social-historical and theological aspects of sermons from orthodox Lutheran theologians from 1550 to 1750. By researching the transformation of theological teachings into social ethical norms, the author inquires into confessionally bound norm and value conceptions the theologians bring into the discurs about 'life words' emerging in the early modern period. Thereby, the author provides a contribution to the actual research debate concerning Lutheran confessionalization and social disciplining as well as the modernization debate and the relations between folk and learned culture.

Diese Arbeit, die mit dem Johannes-Brenz-Preis ausgezeichnet wurde, verbindet auf der Quellenbasis von rund 1000 Predigten theologische und sozialgeschichtliche Fragestellungen zu neuen Erklärungsansätzen.
Die Autorin untersucht die Transformation von theologischer Lehre in sozialethische Norm. Dabei geht es um die Frage, welche konfessionell gebundenen Norm- und Wertvorstellungen von den Theologen bereitgestellt wurden, um auf der Ebene der Volksfrömmigkeit bzw. der Volksreligiosität übernommen werden zu können. Ein Vordringen auf die Ebene der Volkskultur war nur möglich, wenn ein Anschluß an die konkreten Arbeits- und Lebenswelten des einfachen Volkes gelang. Die Tübinger Theologen eignen sich besonders für eine historische Analyse zu diesem Thema: wegen ihrer Stellung als Professoren der evangelischen-tehologischen Fakultät und Inhaber württembergischer Kirchenämter bieten sie die Möglichkeit, diese Transformation auf höchster Ebene zu analysieren. Die Ergebnisse dieser Langzeitstudie können als exemplarisch für die Geschichte des Protestantnismus gelten.
In den Predigten werden die verschiedenen Dimensionen - Dogmatik, Apologie, Deutung der Geschichte, der Lebenswelt, Sozialdisziplinierung, Indoktrination - der lutherisch-orthodoxen Predigt deutlich. Ihre Resultate weisen die Orthodoxie als eine alle Lebensgebiete umfassende Kultur aus.
Die Analyse der Predigten zeigt die wechselnden Bezüge zwischen Theologie und Alltag: Die Gesellschaft produziert und formt Religion und zugleich konstituiert die Religion auch gesellschaftliche Wirklichkeiten.
