Die Reformation im schwedischen Reich wurde paradigmatisch als Königsreformation gedeutet. Die Analyse der Schriften des Reformators Olaus Petri in ihrem Entstehungskontext und vor dem Hintergrund des Agierens von König Gustav Vasa legt jedoch eine andere Bewertung nahe. Hannah M. Kreß zeigt, dass die Phase der Einführung der Reformation, die sich vornehmlich aus inhaltlich-theologischen Gründen abgrenzen lässt, von einer engen und nahezu gleichberechtigten Zusammenarbeit zwischen Reformator und König charakterisiert ist und daher kaum als Königsreformation bezeichnet werden kann. Der Buchdruck wurde zur Verbreitung reformatorischen Gedankenguts mit besonderem Kalkül eingesetzt, um Petris Schriften eine Monopolstellung zu verschaffen und einen Wiedererkennungswert zu generieren. Erst Gustav Vasas zunehmendes reformatorisches Selbstverständnis und seine Emanzipierung von Petri leisteten einer obrigkeitlichen Reformation Vorschub.
