Der Band enthält historische, theologische und exegetische Studien von Karl-Wilhelm Niebuhr zu Paulus und seinen Briefen. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet eine präzise biographische Einordnung des Heidenapostels in das Judentum der hellenistisch-römischen Zeit. Sie wirkt sich in der Bedeutung der Tora für sein Leben und Wirken aus. Bestimmend für seinen Lebensgang wie für die Theologie, die sich in seinen Briefen niederschlägt, wurde seine Begegnung mit dem auferstandenen Christus und der Auftrag, das Christus-Evangelium den Heidenvölkern zu verkünden. Damit hat Paulus aber nicht seine Identität als Israelit abgelegt und hinter sich gelassen. Vielmehr zeigt sich, dass er sein Judesein zeit seines Lebens als theologisch wesentlichen Faktor in die Reflexion des Evangeliums einbezogen hat. Die Frage nach Israel im Zusammenhang des Christus-Evangeliums ist damit ein zentrales Element der paulinischen Theologie.
