In der neueren Matthäusforschung wurde die gut fundierte These aufgestellt, dass die endgültige Form des Matthäusevangeliums das Ergebnis eines umfangreichen Reflexionsprozesses darstellt. Dabei wurden zum einen Jesus-Überlieferungen berücksichtigt und zum anderen die Schriften Israels untersucht, um beide Elemente miteinander zu verknüpfen.
