Als großartiges Zeugnis der Editionstätigkeit baltischer Historiker und Archivare ist das "Liv-, Est- und Kurländische Urkundenbuch" die bedeutendste Quellenedition zur Geschichte des spätmittelalterlichen Livland, des Gebietes der heutigen Staaten Estland und Lettland, und dient als unverzichtbares Instrument zur Erforschung der baltischen Geschichte. Nachdem bis 1914 in rascher Folge 15 Bände erschienen waren, stockte das Vorhaben aufgrund politischer und wissenschaftsorganisatorischer Wechselfälle, und es blieb eine von 1472 bis 1494 reichende Lücke. Sie zu schließen ist seit einiger Zeit Projekt der Baltischen Historischen Kommission, das nun mit einem umfangreichen, großformatigen und inhaltsreichen Band sein erstes Ergebnis hervorbringt. Die Beschäftigung mit den politisch turbulenten Ereignissen der 1470er Jahre wie auch mit den kulturellen und wirtschaftlichen Entwicklungen wird durch das vielfältige, bislang weitgehend unbekannte Quellenmaterial auf eine ganz neue Grundlage gestellt.

As a great testimony to the edition activity of Baltic historians and archivists, the "Liv, Est and Kurländische Urkundenbuch" is the most important source edition on the history of late medieval Livonia, the area of &&&8203;&&&8203;today's Estonia and Latvia, and serves as an indispensable instrument for researching Baltic history. After 15 volumes had been published in rapid succession until 1914, the project stalled due to political and scientific organizational changes, and a gap spanned from 1472 to 1494. Closing it has been a project of the Baltic Historical Commission for some time now, which is now producing its first result with an extensive, large-format and content-rich volume. The occupation with the politically turbulent events of the 1470s as well as with the cultural and economic developments is put on a completely new basis by the diverse, so far largely unknown source material.
