Siegfried Kracauers Filmtheorie ist mehr als eine Theorie des Films. Indem er den Film als wesentliches Reflexionsmedium der Wirklichkeit begreift, entwickelt Kracauer eine zugleich gesellschaftstheoretische, ästhetische und kulturtheoretische Perspektive auf die sozialen und politischen Fragen seiner Zeit. Im Film vermitteln sich für ihn sowohl ideologische Tagträume als auch emanzipatorische Prozesse gesellschaftlicher Selbstaufklärung. Heute ?mit Kracauer? ins Kino zu gehen, bedeutet demnach, die ästhetische Erfahrung des Films nicht nur als massenkulturelle Zerstreuung, sondern auch als Hervorbringung eines kritischen Sinns zu begreifen: eines Sinns für die materielle Wirklichkeit und die in ihr schlummernden Befreiungspotentiale. Die Beiträge des Bandes knüpfen in diesem Sinne an Kracauers film- und gesellschaftskritisches Denken an. Siegfried Kracauer's film theory is more than a theory of film. By understanding film as essentially a medium of the reflection of reality, Kracauer develops a perspective on the social and political issues of his time that is at once social-theoretical, aesthetic, and cultural. For him, film conveys both the ideological daydreams and emancipatory processes of social self-enlightenment. Going to the movies today ?with Kracauer? thus means understanding the aesthetic experience of film not only as a mass cultural diversion, but also as the production of a critical sense: a sense for material reality and the potentials for liberation that lie dormant within it.
