Die vorliegende Untersuchung setzt bei der Frage an, ob es Funktionsverbgefüge (FVG) überhaupt gibt. Diese Frage wird positiv beantwortet. Bei der Etablierung der Kategorie FVG wird allerdings eine andere Ausgangsbasis gewählt als bisher üblich: Grundlage für die Definition sind weniger Eigenschaften des Verbs als vielmehr der gesamten Nomen-Verb-Konstruktion. Die präzisere Klasseneingrenzung ist die Basis für eine Standortbestimmung der FVG zwischen Lexikon und Grammatik. Da eine solche Positionsbestimmung vor allem davon abhängt, wie regelgeleitet bzw. idiosynkratisch eine Erscheinung ist, wird nach der vorhandenen bzw. fehlenden Regelhaftigkeit von FVG gefragt, und zwar in Bezug auf die Kombination von Nomen und Verb sowie das syntaktische Verhalten. Es wird gezeigt, dass es sich bei FVG überwiegend nicht um einen Verbund von lexikalisch voll spezifizierten Einzelidiomen handelt, sondern um Konstruktionen mit Leerstellen, deren Besetzung freilich mehr oder weniger strikten Beschränkungen unterliegt. Im Rahmen einer Netzwerkmodellierung wird schließlich herausgearbeitet, in welcher Weise FVG weitgehend reguläre syntaktische Eigenschaften mit einer idiosynkratischen Bedeutung kombinieren.
