Jan-Hendryk de Boer examines these mutually dependent developments which opened up unexpected scope of action for the protagonists present around 1500 and thereby shows the question to emerge as to with which methodological and theoretical tools a history of ideas is nowadays possible.

Jan-Hendryk de Boer unternimmt in dieser Arbeit eine genealogische Rekonstruktion des Konflikts um Johannes Reuchlin und die jüdischen Bücher mit dem Ziel zu verstehen, wie strukturelle Gegebenheiten, personales Handeln und interpersonale Kommunikation Möglichkeiten und Grenzen für Akteure schaffen, mit ihrem Denken, Schreiben und Handeln die Wirklichkeit zu verändern. Der spätmittelalterliche Judenhass, die Ausbreitung des Humanismus, der Buchdruck sowie die Erosion institutioneller Mechanismen wie Lehrverurteilungen und Zensur werden als Ermöglichungsbedingungen verstanden, die dazu führten, dass die Auseinandersetzung um die Frage, wie mit dem jüdischen Schrifttum umzugehen sei, allmählich eskalierte. Die beteiligten Humanisten, Theologen und Publizisten versuchten, die Gelegenheit für eine Neuordnung der gelehrten Welt zu nutzen. Sich neue Handlungsspielräume zu schaffen, bedeutete dabei immer auch, danach zu streben, den momentanen Überschuss an Kontingenz erneut in Ordnung zu überführen, aus der die jeweiligen Gegner ausgeschlossen werden sollten. Begleitet wird die historische Rekonstruktion von der Frage, wie eine ideengeschichtliche Arbeit gestaltet werden kann. Neben sprachlichen Handlungen treten insbesondere Institutionen und Intentionen als Faktoren in den Blick, die im Zentrum einer ideengeschichtlichen Methodologie stehen können. So arose the questions of how to handle non-Christian knowledge, how to deal with a rampant anti-Semitism and the spread of humanism to the north of the Alps. In addition, the search for the original union of faith and knowledge saw a Christian kabbalah develop, while new forms of publication emerged through the printing press. The formation of a wider, more learned public and finally the crisis of institutions, which up till then had been a stabilizing influence on scholarship, were further factors. Jan-Hendryk de Boer examines these mutually dependent developments which opened up unexpected scope of action for the protagonists present around 1500. From his genealogical analysis, the question emerges as to with which methodological and theoretical tools a history of ideas is nowadays possible.
