Der Sammelband widmet sich dem Deutschen als Minderheitensprache in der Welt. In insgesamt 13 empirisch basierten Beiträgen werden in kontrastiven und Einzelstudien extraterritoriale Varietäten betrachtet, die räumlich von Europa (Belgien, Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien, Polen, Rumänien) über Nordamerika (Kanada, USA), Südamerika (Chile), Afrika (Namibia) bis hin zu Australien und Ozeanien reichen.
Die Studien widmen sich der sprachlichen Variation in den extraterritorialen Varietäten des Deutschen auf verschiedenen Sprachebenen: von der (selten untersuchten) Phonetik und Phonologie über die Morphologie bis hin zur (Morpho-)Syntax. Dabei decken sie innovative Regeln und Merkmalabbau, aber auch Konservierung von Phänomenen auf. In der Betrachtung der Variation werden systemische und soziolinguistische Faktoren berücksichtigt. Dabei werden unter den Bedingungen der Sprachkontaktsituationen die Varietätenkompetenz und die Sprachenkompetenz der Sprachnutzerinnen ebenso betrachtet wie der Sprachenstatus (als Mehrheits-/Minderheitensprache), sprachideologische Annahmen zur Ein- und Mehrsprachigkeit sowie Spracheinstellungen.
Der Sammelband trägt inhaltlich und methodisch zu einer datenbasierten Variantengrammatik des Deutschen als Mehrheits- und Minderheitensprache bei.
