Die Eigenschaften und die Leistungsfähigkeit eines Kunststoffteils sind dadurch charakterisiert, dass das Materialverhalten stark durch das Zusammenspiel vieler einwirkender Faktoren beeinflusst wird. Die Herstellung eines Kunststoffteils beginnt mit der Werkstoffauswahl in den frühen Phasen der Formteilkonstruktion. Bei der Konstruktion und der Herstellung von Kunststoffprodukten muss deshalb berücksichtigt werden, dass sich Materialeigenschaften, Verarbeitungsverfahren und Konstruktionsmerkmale gegenseitig beeinflussen und nicht getrennt betrachtet werden koennen.
Dieses Buch behandelt sowohl die Werkstoffkunde der Kunststoffe, als auch die relevanten Verarbeitunsprozesse. Der zweite Teil des Buches behandelt die Modellierung mit Hilfe von analytischen Methoden, während im letzten Teil die numerischen Konzepte zur Simulation kunststofftechnischer Prozesse behandelt werden. Die Diskussion produktspezifischer Aspekte ist nicht Gegenstand dieses Buches, vielmehr sollen die Techniken erläutert werden, die zur Modellierung und Simulation von Verfahren in der kunststofftechnischen Praxis eingesetzt werden.
