Doch schon Hildegard von Bingen wusste im Mittelalter Positives zu berichten : »Die Kichererbse ist warm und angenehm und leicht zu essen und sie vermehrt dem, der sie isst, nicht die üblen Säfte. Wer aber Fieber hat, der brate Kichererbsen über frischen Kohlen und esse sie und er wird geheilt werden.« Auch damals schon war die Kichererbse als Arme-Leute-Essen bekannt. In vielen Regionen der Welt ist sie es heute noch.
