Neben den »Schriften« sind die »Seminare« der beste Zugang zu Lacans Denken. Dieses Seminar wurde in der Übersetzung von Norbert Haas, zuerst im Quadriga-Verlag erschienen, vorgelegt. Die »Vier Grundbegriffe der Psychoanalyse« aus dem Jahr 1963-64 fielen in jene Zeit, in der sich Lacan von der IPA (International Psychoanalytical Association) trennte und seine eigene Schule EFP (École Freudienne de Paris) gründete. Es war auch das erste, das Jacques-Alain Miller in der bis heute noch nicht abgeschlossenen Reihe der Seminar-Editionen herausgab.
