The series of Greek Christian Writers of the First Centuries AD (GCS) started in Leipzig in 1897, then moved to Berlin, and to Walter de Gruyter in 2001 and has been publishing the results of the Academy Project "Greek Christian Writers", which was launched in the then Royal Prussian Academy and has been continued by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy. It publishes large critical editions with historically-oriented introductions and indexes of those works which originated in the Graecophone part of the ancient Christian Roman Empire and have not been included in the other major series of editions. The objective is to provide complete coverage of the first three centuries.

Karl Holls Ausgabe der antihäretischen Schrift des spätantiken Bischofs Epiphanius von Salamis (Zypern) ist ein Klassiker unter den Editionen antiker griechischer christlicher Schriftsteller. Das Werk selbst, vom Autor unter dem sprechenden Titel “Arzneikästlein gegen die Häresien” veröffentlicht, enthält eine große Zahl von nirgendwo sonst erhaltenen Originaltexten diverser christlicher Gruppen, die von der Mehrheitskirche als häretisch ausgeschieden worden sind. Vor allem Lehre und Leben gnostischer Gruppen, aber auch anderer Strömungen wie beispielsweise der Montanisten, hat Epiphanius mit großem Eifer beschrieben. Der Berliner Kirchenhistoriker Karl Holl hat sich mit seiner Ausgabe bemüht, aus der schwierigen handschriftlichen Überlieferung einen lesbaren und grammatisch korrekten Text herzustellen. Dazu hat er einen reichen sachlichen Kommentar im Apparat beigegeben. Selbst wenn die häufigen Eingriffe in den überlieferten Bestand Kritiker auf den Plan gerufen haben, verwendet noch die jüngste große englische Übersetzung Holls Text. Zu Holls Lebzeiten erschienen zwei Bände (1915/1922). Nach dem Tode Holls 1926 hat Hans Lietzmann einen dritten Band 1933 veröffentlicht. Als vierter Band ist 2006 ein ausführlicher Index erschienen.

Während die Bände Epiphanius II und III seit 1980 bzw. 1985 in einem korrigierten Nachdruck mit Ergänzungen von Jürgen Dummer lieferbar sind, war der erste Band mit den wichtigen Informationen zu den jüdischen Sekten und den Gnostikern seit langem vergriffen. Er wird nun ebenfalls in einem korrigierten Nachdruck vorgelegt.

Karl Holl’s edition of the anti-heretical text by the late Classical Bishop Epiphanius of Salamis (Cyprus) is a classic among the editions of Greek Christian writers from classical antiquity. The work itself, which the author published under the eloquent title of ‘Medicine Chest against Heresies’, contains a large number of original texts, not preserved elsewhere, produced by various Christian groups which were rejected as heretical by the majority of the Church. With great zeal, Epiphanius described above all the teachings and lives of gnostic groups, but he also turned his attention to other movements, for example the Monists. In his edition, the Berlin-based ecclesiastical historian Karl Holl attempted to produce a legible and grammatically correct text from the difficult manuscript sources; in the critical apparatus, he provided a rich factual commentary. Even though critics were annoyed by his frequent interference with the source texts, still the latest major English translation uses Holl’s text. Two volumes appeared during Holl’s lifetime (in 1915 and 1922). After his death in 1926, Hans Lietzmann published a third volume in 1933. In 2006, a fourth volume, containing a detailed index, was published.

While the 2nd and 3rd volumes have been available since 1980 and 1985 respectively as a corrected reprint with addenda by Jürgen Dummer, the first volume, with important information on Jewish sects and the Gnostics, has long been out of print. It is now also available again in a corrected version.
