Oxford Specialty Training is a brand new series and the first to take account of the new training structure and syllabuses, as introduced by the Modernising Medical Careers initiative.
Training in Surgery is designed to be a complete curriculum guide to specialty training in surgery, covering the material taught during the first two years of training, as well as the topics examined as part of Royal College membership. Written by both trainees who are currently completing their specialty training, and senior practitioners, the information is accurate, comprehensive and at the appropriate level.
Easy navigation is combined with discrete double-page spreads on individual topics allowing rapid access to information. This is complemented by full colour illustrations including high quality clinical photographs, imaging and diagrams, to aid visual memory of the topics. Breakout boxes discuss controversial topics, show techniques, and list relevant references.
The final product is indeed well organized, and the most important subjects the surgical trainee has to learn are covered. I tend to believe most students and residents nowadays like such a format: easy to browse, easy to memorize, useful to prepare for a specific rotation or an examination.
