Jos&&&201; Mart&&&205;&&&39;s Liberative Political Theology argues that Mart&&&205;&&&39;s religious views, which at first glance might appear outdated and irrelevant, are&&&160;actually critical to understanding his social vision. During a time where the predominate philosophical view was materialistic (Darwin,&&&160;Marx)&&&160;Mart&&&205; sought to reconcile&&&160;social and political trends with the metaphysical, believing that ignoring the spiritual would create a soulless approach toward achieving a liberative society. As such, Mart&&&205; used religious concepts and ideas as a tool that could bring forth a more just social order. In short, this book argues Mart&&&205; could be considered a precursor to what would come to be called, Liberation Theology.

Miguel De La Torre has authored the most comprehensive text written thus far concerning Mart&&&205;&&&39;s religious views and how they impacted his political thought. The few similar texts that exist are written&&&160;in Spanish; and among those, mainly romanticize Mart&&&205;&&&39;s spirituality in an attempt of portraying him as a &&&39;Christian believer.&&&39; Only a handful&&&160;provide an academic investigation of Mart&&&205;&&&39;s theological thought&&&160;based solely on his writings,&&&160;and those concentrate on just one aspect of Mart&&&205;&&&39;s religious influences. Jos&&&201; Mart&&&205;&&&39;s Liberative Political Theology&&&160;allows&&&160;for mutual influence between Mart&&&205;&&&39;s political and religious views rather than assuming one had precedence over the other.
