'Rural Conflict and the Roots of Indian Nationalism: Allahabad District since 1800' from Paul R. Brass and Francis Robinson (ed.), The Indian National Congress and Indian Society, 1885-1985: Ideology, Social Structure and Political Dominance (Chanakya Publications 1986) explores Congress alliance with powerful interests in the countryside and the conservatism of rural politics in central UP.
