Shot by Both Sides ist einerseits das Porträt einer Stadt aus der Perspektive einer lebenshungrigen jungen Frau, andererseits eine dokumentarische Collage von Menschen abseits des grossen Glamours. 1986 macht sich Cornelia Wilhelm zwanzigjährig auf nach New York. Mit ihrem Fotoapparat im Gepäck taucht sie ein in die raue Grossstadt. Während sie tagsüber bei Shootings für den Pirelli-Kalender assistiert, zieht sie nachts durch die Bars und Musikkneipen und fotografiert das Nacht- leben, die Künstlerszene, aber auch den Alltag in der Bronx und in Harlem.
Ihr Rückzugsort ist dabei Coney Island, wo sich in die Jahre gekommene Vergnügungsparks aneinanderreihen und die Schausteller der Buden mit ebenso rauem Charme die nächste Show, die nächste Attraktion anpreisen. Dort verbringt die Arbeiterklasse New Yorks ihre Wochenenden auf der Suche nach kleinen Momenten des Glücks, von der die Fotografien erzählen.
