Matrix-Metalloproteinasen (MMPs) sind die wichtigsten Enzyme für die Erhaltung der extrazellulären Matrix. MMPs sind auch an mehreren biologischen und pathologischen Krankheiten beteiligt. Aufgrund der hohen Komplexität ihrer Regulierung und Aktivität stellen sie eine große Herausforderung für die Wissenschaft dar. MMPs werden durch EMMPRIN auf parakrine Weise oder durch Zell-zu-Zell-Interaktion reguliert. Die Expression von Cyclophilin A (CyPA) korreliert mit der Expression von MMP-1, MMP-2 und MMP-9 in entzündeter Gingiva. CyPA spielt eine wichtige Rolle bei biologischen Bedingungen wie T-Zell-Aktivierung, Proteinfaltung und -transport. Um seine Rolle bei der Entstehung von Krankheiten und seine Wirkungsweise zu verstehen, sind weitere Studien erforderlich.
