Durante i mesi di occupazione tedesca a Roma, dal settembre 1943 al giugno 1944, aiut? pi? di 6.000 persone, tra cui molti ebrei, a fuggire dagli scagnozzi nazisti. Il suo quartier generale organizzativo era la sua stanza nel collegio tedesco. Gli autori mostrano in dettaglio quali fossero le condizioni di vita al Campo Santo Teutonico durante questo periodo pericoloso e come O'Flaherty riusc? a portare avanti la sua opera di soccorso in tutta Roma.
