Dies gilt nicht zuletzt für die Reichsstädte. Die Beiträge des Bandes rücken diese kleineren Reichsstädte in den Fokus. Insbesondere werden deren ökonomische und soziale Grundlagen erörtert und anhand der Schriftgutproduktion untersucht, wie sich kleine Reichsstädte auch im Vergleich zu kleinen Landstädten darstellten, organisierten und verwalteten. Weitere Studien arbeiten die reichs- und regionalpolitische Rolle kleiner Reichsstädte heraus.
