Die Jesuiten sind aus der Geschichte der europäischen Kartographie nicht wegzudenken. Häufig waren sie die ersten Europäer, die Karten bestimmter Regionen in Asien, im Pazifik oder in Amerika zeichneten und einem breiten Publikum in Europa zugänglich machten. Dies traf auch auf den oberen Amazonas zu, wo sich jesuitische Missionare im Auftrag der spanischen Krone ab 1638 niederließen. Viele Missionare verbrachten Jahre oder Jahrzehnte am Amazonas. Irina Saladin untersucht die Zusammenhänge von missionarischen Praktiken und Wissensproduktion. Sie zeigt, dass die alltäglichen Reisen durch das Labyrinth aus Flüssen und der enge Kontakt der Missionare zur indigenen Bevölkerung Auswirkungen auf die kartographischen Repräsentationen des Amazonas in der Frühen Neuzeit hatten, ebenso wie religiöse Konzepte und politische Aktivitäten des Ordens.
