Das Buch nimmt seinen Ausgang bei einer Entdeckung der Künstlerin R. H. Quaytman, der beim genaueren Betrachten von Paul Klees Zeichunung »Angelus Novus« von 1920 aufgefallen war, dass Klee das Bild auf einen Kupferstich aus dem 19. Jahrhundert kaschiert hatte, der nur kaum sichtbar ist, sodass er jahrzehntelang von seinen Besitzern - Walter Benjamin, Theodor W. Adorno und Gershom Scholem - übersehen wurde. Annie Bourneuf geht der Frage nach, warum dieses von Klee nicht ganz verborgene Blatt von Bedeutung ist, und welche künstlerischen, politischen und theologischen Konstellationen sich in diesem Bild aus dem Besitz Walter Benjamins verschränken, um zu einer völlig neuen Auslegung der berühmten Arbeit zu gelangen.
