Mit der bisher kaum bekannten, weil größtenteils unerforschten Geschichte der deutsch-lateinischen Wörterbücher (1750–1850) beschäftigt sich vorliegendes Buch.
Umfassend werden diese Wörterbücher aus latinistischer Perspektive auf Wortschatz und kulturgeschichtliche Relevanz hin untersucht. Den Schwerpunkt bilden die Werke unter anderem von Kirsch (seit 1714), Bayer (seit 1724), Bernhold (1757), Bauer (seit 1778), Scheller (seit 1784), Kraft (seit 1820/1821), Lünemann (1821), Wüstemann (1826/27), Schönberger (seit 1820) und Georges (zuletzt 1882). Als wichtigster Faktor für die hohe Anzahl an neuen Wörterbüchern lässt sich vor allem das neuhumanistische Gymnasium protestantischer Provenienz ausmachen, in dem das Lateinische trotz Niedergang des Gebrauchlateins immer noch überraschend stark im Mittelpunkt stand. Untersucht werden die Wörterbücher daraufhin, wie stark sich der Wandel des Lateinischen von einer akademischen Umgangssprache hin zu einer der Formalbildung dienenden Sprache mit klassizistischem Anspruch am Gymnasium auch in den Wörterbüchern niederschlägt.
Verankert an der Schnittstelle zwischen Kultur- und Sprachgeschichte, zwischen lateinischer Didaktik- und zeitgenössischer Lexikographiegeschichte, kann dieses Buch als grundlegende Studie der weiteren Erforschung dieses Feldes dienen.
