Gender Studies, manchmal auch Geschlechterforschung genannt, sind ein relativ junges, dafür aber äußerst dynamisches und vielfältiges Forschungs- und Diskussionsfeld. An den Universitäten sind Gender Studies zumeist inter- oder transdisziplinär organisiert. Einst entstanden als Reflexionskontext der zweiten Frauenbewegung, haben sie sich inzwischen deutlich ausdifferenziert und umfassen Themen von Technik bis Sorge, von der Normierung des Begehrens, von Männlichkeit bis zur auch internen Rassismus- und Imperialismuskritik. Grundlegend für die Gender Studies ist ein Verständnis von Geschlecht als sozial hergestellt und daher auch als veränderbar und politisch. Der Band erläutert entsprechende sozialkonstruktivistische Ansätze und informiert ferner über wichtige aktuelle Positionen und Debatten in den betreffenden Themenfeldern.
