Haiders Syntax präsentiert die Grammatik des Satzes explizit, prinzipienbasiert und typologisch fundiert (=generativ). Der Autor widersetzt sich aber dezidiert dem Trend zu empirieferner Abstraktheit und derivationeller Komplexität. Er stellt ein Modell dagegen, in dem das Projektionsproblem auf direktem Weg zu lösen ist: Grammatik wird als jenes Wissenssystem charakterisiert, das dazu befähigt, über seriellen Repräsentationen (=phonetische Form) hierarchisch organisierte Dependenzstrukturen zu entfalten (=syntaktische Struktur). Die explanativ adäquate Grammatik ist eine projektive Grammatik.
