Long description:
The book offers for the first time an in-depth study of craft production in the capital of the Mongol Empire, Karakorum. Workshops, installations, remains from production processes, and tools are analyzed. The analysis of the organization of craft production reveals the dependency of artisans from the elites. A multi-layered picture of the artisans' quarter excavated in parts from 2000-2005 emerges, contributing significantly to a new understanding of cities in the Eastern Steppes.
