    Traditionally, organic synthesis is concerned with the preparation of a single target molecule in an efficient maner. This includes, for example, the well established areas ot total synthesis in academia and process chemistry in industry. Recently, the development of high-throughput methods for screening compounds has precipitated a change in the classical paradigm. For many applications, it is now useful (or even necessary) to prepare a large set of compounds. This is the basis of combinatorial chemistry, or parallel organic synthesis as it is often referred to.

    The book begins with an introduction, followed by a detailed discussion of the organic reactions that are widely used in parallel synthesis. Both solution and solid-phase methods are covered and throughout the intention is to guide the reader's understanding of the principles. The next section of the book is concerned with the important issue of what types of compounds should be made, and covers current thinking on library design.

    The second half of the book describes a series of illustrative examples of combinatorial chemistry and parallel synthesis. These are primarily taken from drug discovery applications, and include both synthesis of discrete and pooled libraries. Each chapter of the book contains an extensive bibliography of both reviews and the primary literature.
