Das Buch präsentiert in aufwendiger Drucktechnik mehr als 80 Hinterglasbilder mit Landschaftsmotiven ? keine Werke der Volkskunst, sondern Gemälde hinter Glas, deren künstlerische und technische Qualität und deren Sujets sie als Hochkunst auszeichnen. Erstmals wird hier eine Einordnung der Hinterglasmalerei in die Landschaftsmalerei des 18. Jahrhunderts vorgenommen und so ihre bislang unterschätzte kunsthistorische Bedeutung deutlich gemacht. Die gezeigten Bilder entstanden nach graphischen Vorlagen, die hier teilweise ebenfalls präsentiert werden und unter denen sich Werke berühmter Landschaftsmaler des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts befinden, zum Beispiel Francesco Basssano, Nicolaes Berchem, Claude Joseph Vernet, François Boucher, Francesco Zuccarelli, Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner und Jacopo Amiconi.
