Mehr als zwanzig Jahre hat Emerenc den Haushalt des Budapester Schriftstellerpaars versorgt. Ihre "Herrschaft" hatte sie fest im Griff. Es gefiel ihr, wenn sie gebraucht wurde. Sie selbst aber blieb unnahbar. Doch wem sie diente, dem erwies sie unzählige Liebesdienste, so auch der Schriftstellerin, zu der sie allmählich eine fast innige Beziehung entwickelt. Dann erkrankt Emerenc. Sie stirbt in dem Glauben, daß ihre Herrin sie nie geliebt hat. Sonst hätte sie nicht zugelassen, dass man in ihre verschlossene Wohnung eindringt und sie ins Krankenhaus bringt. Seither wird die Schriftstellerin von einem immer wiederkehrenden Traum heimgesucht: sie steht vor einer verschlossenen Tür, zu der sie den Schlüssel zu haben glaubt. Doch wie sehr sie sich auch bemüht: sie bekommt die Tür nicht auf.
