Die Arbeit widmet sich der umfassenden konstruktikographischen Kategorisierung und Analyse von Satzgefügen mit konditionaler Bedeutung vom Mittelhochdeutschen bis zum Gegenwartsdeutschen und stellt dabei die Bezüge zwischen einem konstruktionsgrammatischen und einem diachronen Analyseansatz her.
Das Ergebnis ist eine exhaustive Aufschlüsselung von Konditionalsatzkonstruktionen und ihren spezifischen formalen und semantischen/funktionalen Eigenschaften und Restriktionen bezogen auf die jeweiligen Sprachstufen sowie die Modellierung einer diachronen Netzwerkstruktur. Die mittelhochdeutschen, frühneuhochdeutschen und gegenwartsdeutschen Konditionalkonstruktionen werden hinsichtlich quantitativer und qualitativer Faktoren verglichen und lexikalische, semantische und syntaktische Sprachwandelphänomene aufgezeigt. Die Arbeit schließt mit Prognosen für die weitere Entwicklung von Konditionalsatzgefügen.
Neben einer ausführlichen Untersuchung konditionaler Äußerungen auf Satzebene vom Mittelhochdeutschen bis heute und der Analyse konditionalen Sprachwandels zeigt diese Arbeit auch eine musterhafte Herangehensweise für die diachrone Analyse von Konstruktionsfamilien und ihren Netzwerkstrukturen.
