Für seine ?Vorschule der Aesthetik" (1804 und 1813) und deren spät veröffentlichte Erweiterung ?Kleine Nachschule zur ästhetischen Vorschule" (1825) hat sich Jean Paul etlicher seiner Notatsammlungen bedient, die er zeitlebens führte und erweiterte. Seine ?Bemerkungen über uns närrische Menschen", seine ?Gedankenhefte" und seine Briefkopierbücher, insbesondere aber natürlich seine ?Philosophischen und Ästhetischen Untersuchungen" und seine ?Exzerpte" waren Ausgangspunkt des Schaffens an seiner großen kunsttheoretischen Schrift. Die vorliegende Edition präsentiert erstmals sämtliche handschriftliche Vorarbeiten inklusive der Lesarten und stellt für zwei der Vorarbeitenhefte aufgrund neuer Erkenntnisse die ursprüngliche Reihenfolge wieder her. Den Abschluss der Edition bildet eine für Jean Paul sehr seltene Vorstufe des Druckmanuskripts zur ?Kleinen Nachschule zur ästhetischen Vorschule", die dem Leser einen unmittelbaren Einblick in die Werkstatt des Autors bietet.
