Aus diesem Grund wurden nun, einige Jahre nach dem sehr erfolgreichen Zyklus der Brahms-Symphonien, auch die Werke Schumanns bei Konzerten in der Staatsoper Berlin sowie der Berliner Philharmonie mit der Staatskapelle Berlin aufgenommen.Das hier zu erlebende mitreißend-spontane, zugleich aber überaus differenzierte und von höchster Konzentration gekennzeichnete Musizieren ist nicht nur ein eindrucksvolles Plädoyer für Schumanns Symphonien, sondern bekräftigt nochmals das Bekenntnis Daniel Barenboims zu ihnen, das er in einem Interview mit der New York Times im Jahr 2004 ablegte: Machen wir uns nichts vor: Wenn es Brahms nicht gegeben hätte, wären wir viel ärmer, aber die Musikgeschichte wäre mehr oder weniger genauso verlaufen. Doch Beethoven und Schumann haben Wagner und Mahler ermöglicht.
