Short description:
Bereits im Alter von 16 Jahren wurde Ruth Gipps (1921-1999) am Royal College of Music in London aufgenommen. Sie studierte bei Ralph Vaughan Williams und Gordon Jacob und später Oboe bei Leon Goossens. Während des 2. Weltkriegs erhielt sie eine Stelle als Oboistin beim City of Birmingham Orchestra und widmete einen großen Teil ihrer Zeit dem Komponieren. Dass zu ihren Lebzeiten jedoch die besondere Begabung als Komponistin kein Garant für angemessene Anerkennung war, beweist u.a. die 3. Sinfonie (1969), die ganze vier Jahre auf eine professionelle Aufführung warten musste.
