Short description:
A scholarly consideration of Akï¿1⁄2nwï¿1⁄2mï¿1⁄2 ï¿1⁄2sï¿1⁄2lï¿1⁄2 and his anthology, ï¿1⁄2fï¿1⁄2ï¿1⁄2mï¿1⁄2 ï¿1⁄2ti ï¿1⁄2won ï¿1⁄2rï¿1⁄2fï¿1⁄2 Mï¿1⁄2ï¿1⁄2rï¿1⁄2n, via the analysis of the influential role of traditional forms of praise-singing in Yorï¿1⁄2bï¿1⁄2 contemporary poetry.
MoreLong description:
Akï¿1⁄2nwï¿1⁄2mï¿1⁄2 ï¿1⁄2sï¿1⁄2lï¿1⁄2 (1940-2018), renowned writer, scholar, and sentinel of indigenous African languages, contributed to the development of Yorï¿1⁄2bï¿1⁄2 literary traditions by producing most of his literary works in Yorï¿1⁄2bï¿1⁄2.
His artistic pacesetting in Yorï¿1⁄2bï¿1⁄2 literature included his anthology, ï¿1⁄2fï¿1⁄2ï¿1⁄2mï¿1⁄2 ï¿1⁄2ti ï¿1⁄2won ï¿1⁄2rï¿1⁄2fï¿1⁄2 Mï¿1⁄2ï¿1⁄2rï¿1⁄2n (1978), which contains poems composed over a significant period in his life. Language, Translation, and Poetic Realities considers ï¿1⁄2sï¿1⁄2lï¿1⁄2's language use in this anthology; his contributions to the promotion of Yorï¿1⁄2bï¿1⁄2 and African linguistic and cultural values; and the procedures, benefits, and challenges of translating his poetry into English.
In so doing, Akinloyï¿1⁄2 ï¿1⁄2jï¿1⁄2 examines the understudied relationship between African oral traditions and contemporary African literature, addressing in particular the influential role of traditional forms of praise-singing in contemporary Yorï¿1⁄2bï¿1⁄2 poetry.
