Die "Punica" des Silius Italicus, von Poggio Bracciolini in der Reanaissance wieder entdeckt, ist das längste der erhaltenen lateinischen Epen. Silius, der im 1. nachchristlichen Jahrhundert lebte, bewunderte Vergil und versuchte nach dessen Vorbild, das dramatische Geschehen des 2. Punischen Krieges in Dichtung zu bannen. Das monumentale, rund 12 000 Verse umfassende Epos hat neben Livius und Ennius vermutlich auch andere, verloren gegangene Quellen genutzt. Es ist mit seinen 17 Büchern eines der großen Epenwerke der Flavischen Zeit. Ferdinand Stürner, der sich seit längerem mit der Literatur der Flavischen Epoche beschäftigt, legt die erste und moderne Übersetzung der Libri Punicorum bellorum vor.
