Ursprünglich für April 2020 zur Feier von Beethovens 250. Geburtstag geplant, ist das Projekt "Beethoven: Die Sinfonien" die dritte Zusammenarbeit zwischen Yannick Nézet-Séguin und dem COE, nachdem bereits 2014 und 2017 komplette Schumann- und Mendelssohn-Zyklen gemeinsam aufgeführt und aufgenommen wurden.Für den Sinfonie-Zyklus wurde das nun vollständige Aufführungsmaterial mit dem Notentext der "Neuen Beethoven-Gesamtausgabe" verwendet. Besonders in der 9. Sinfonie wird der Unterschied buchstäblich hör- und erlebbar, da Beethovens originale und erst kürzlich wiederentdeckte Kontrafagottstimme zum ersten Mal verwendet wird.Die Aufnahme wird auch der erste vollständige Beethoven-Zyklus des COE seit der bahnbrechenden CD mit Nikolaus Harnoncourt in den 1990er Jahren sein.Yannick Nézet-Séguin hat gerade seinen allerersten Grammy für die "Beste Orchesterleistung" gewonnen für seine Aufnahme der Sinfonien Nr. 1 und 3 von Florence Price mit dem Philadelphia Orchestra.
